Importance of the Project and the Motives

In the wake of this devastating war that left thousands of wounded in the besieged city of Taiz and in the midst of the current difficult situation, the wounded were suffering from their wounds, especially since 90% of the medical and health centers and hospitals in the city were shut down due to the siege imposed on them and the lack of all the basics of life. The number of people with motion disabilities and amputees increased increased in frightening numbers to reach more than (700) wounded with paralysis and amputation of all types.

Among these centers (The Center of the Artificial Limbs and Natural Rehabilitation), the Center of the Artificial Limbs and Natural Rehabilitation is a governmental specialized center in manufacturing the artificial limbs, jabs, chokes and fillers,  it is also specialized in rehabilitation, training and physiotherapy. It has a qualified staff and equipped with modern equipment. During the crisis, it was supported by Sana'a Limbs Center and the International Committee of the Red Cross until the beginning of the ongoing war. During the war, the center suffered repeated damage occurring to the building, which caused it to stop working for nine months from mid-July 2015 until mid-April 2016.

After we tried to reboot it, but didn’t find any interest or support, whether officially or privately, we bear the burden after all gave up thinking about the support and operating of the center, as through the initiative of "Together we shall not be conquered", which restored hope to all those affected and in need of the services of the center in terms of injuries from war, amputation, paralysis, fractures or foot fall. This initiative covered all the costs of restoration, namely, the provision of the required materials, transport, the workers' expenses, contracting and the write-off. Broken, preparing the building and renovating the surfaces and sides, covered repairing the broken down water network, as well as maintenance of the electrical system and replace the damaged.

The initiative "Together we shall not be conquered" bear maintenance costs of all the machines, equipment and devices, which stopped working at that period and prepare it to work with the he maintenance of the generator and the replacement of many of the damaged and broken pieces, after the completion of the maintenance and restoration process, the center became ready and prepared to be restarted, the staff was called and it was opened for a trial period and for a month till the end of April 2016 in which the initiative covered all operating expenses and incentives and the required local assistance materials, that the Center has an inventory of external raw materials prepared by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for before the incidents occurred.

Project Emergence

The Foundation provided all necessary requirements for the continuation of the Center's work since the signing of the contract with the Center's management, which is represented by

Operating requirements included: 

1)    Motivation: Where the Initiative of "Together we shall not be conquered" bear monthly incentives to all 20 employees who are willing and desiring to work under these conditions.

2)    Local raw materials.

3)    As well as the operating expenses of the raw materials and was provided one by one, whenever needed.

4) Office Administrative expenses: All administrative expenses, office materials and hygiene and the fact that the initiative is the only supporter of the Center, so it endured along with that the provision of water continuously.

5) Fuels: Fuels and oils were provided on ongoing bases by the Initiative.

Due to the heavy burden of the initiative, it was a source of satisfaction for all for the success achieved and access to what was hoped of serving the most important segment of the war-wounded and forgotten by everyone, for that it entered into a contract for three months with the staff of the Center to continue the work, and the initiative covered all the above expenses, and with the same pace,  interest and sincere faith the initiative continued the support and attention, and the workers continued to produce and discipline, that the more time passed, the greater the number of cases arriving at the center, forcing the initiative to open the work area in the evening with extra expenses for serving the largest number of cases referred to the center, taking into consideration that all services are 100% free.

Project Objective

It is to create an environment that helps the physically disabled to overcome their disability and forget the weaknesses resulting from their disability and make their focus on their strengths to develop them. The environment is suitable for them and moves them from the stage of dependency to the work stage, from the stage of latency to the stage of movement, and to contribute in finding alternative solutions to those who lost their limbs to go back to walk and movement again. Here is the achievement report of the Center of Artificial Limbs and physical therapy in the agreed work period of three months under the contract between the Center and the initiative. It is the months (6 _7_8 of 2016) that the initiative bear the operational budget for free service to all war wounded and patients with malformations and accidents.

Project's Beneficiaries Number

Since the Center was operational until the end of the contract on 30/11/2016, the Center has received approximately 14,000 cases in the two Departments of Limbs and Natural Rehabilitation, it was distributed as follows:

12598 Physiotherapy and physical rehabilitation conducted free of charge by the Center under the contract between the Initiative and the Center for all wounded and patients

58 artificial limbs above the knee, 30 artificial limbs under the knee, 215 splints of various types, 30 foot supports, 36 foot fillings, 35 Denis Brown 66 feet, 112 SMO, 210 walking sticks, 213 limbs restoration.

Project continuity

In view of the heavy burden of the initiative, it satisfied everyone with the success achieved and reaching to what it hoped of serving the society segments of those who were wounded in war and forgotten by everyone, for that it entered into several work contracts with a total of 8 months with the Center Management to continue working, and the Organization covers all the aforementioned expenses, and with the same pace,  interest and sincere faith the initiative continued the support and consideration, and the workers continued to produce and discipline, that the more time passed, the greater the number of cases arriving at the center, forcing the initiative to open the work area in the evening with extra expenses for serving the largest number of cases referred to the center, taking into consideration that all services are 100% free. The contracts with the mentioned departments expired in 2017 and the mentioned departments are still provides the services to incoming patients until the moment.
